Tires in Florida

To Lou, who is moving to Ft. Myers and is wondering about tires ...

Having lived across the swamp for two years (Ft. Lauderdale/Miami),
wet traction has to be a primary consideration here. The
semi-infamous "Florida Ice", caused when a brief (daily)
thunderstorm mixes with road oils and deposits, make wet traction
imperative.

Unfortunately, particularly the west coast of Florida is repleat with
drivers from the upper midwest who don't realize that driving in rain
(or, just after rain) in Florida is as demanding as driving on snow
and ice, and keep on at 75mph or so.

The wet traction will be needed daily, particularly if you will be
out at all between 2-4pm (when the rains come, pretty much every
day). Usually by 5:00pm or so the roads are dry again.

I've seen several accidents caused by a stretch of I-75 between Ft.
Myers and Tampa, caused by wet roads, and other drivers losing
control of a spinning vehicle. The turnpike is a little better, but
that's not much help to you on the West Coast (Florida's West Coast).

BTW, this is NOT a commentary on your driving skill, I'm sure you are
an excellent driver. Unfortunately, the guy just in front of you,
who you are passing, may not be.

Good luck, and hope you enjoy Ft. Myers. A drive over to Sebring
(about 2 hours, by regular standards) would be well worth it!
Unfortunately, I never made it there.

God rest ye merry,

M.
