Someone from Iowa wondered what kind of tyres to put on his "new" 91iX.
Specifically, can he run all-seasons for all seasons.
If Iowa is anything like Ontario, the answer is yes, but.
On my 90 iX, I run through the winter the OEM Euro Uniroyal 340 that the car
came with. I've never been stuck in a snowdrift/bank, etc., nor have I
had an appreciable skid. I think we get as much snow as Iowa, but until
the past election, we also plowed our highways pretty well too.
I used to run these tyres through the other 3 seasons too, but one trip to
Mosport convinced me that the Uniroyals were poor handlers. (Yes, my
long-suffering Mosport instructors, I am a poor handler too, but I can't
change me as easily as the tyres.) Talking with some tyre folks, I had the
sense that all-seasons were inherently round-shouldered & even if
speed-rated, weren't great for emergency handling situations.
So I have been running happily on Yokohama AVS-I ever since (which do
come in the iX size). BTW, be careful because the iX wheel takes a
somewhat unusual offset, so if you're buying new wheels, mention this -
the specs are in the owner's manual. If you're just buying new tyres,
don't worry about this.
As for the iX registry, I expect Gordon Haines, its heroic maven, will tell
you about that. If not, contact me privately, and I will go thru my DOS
contortions to find it for you.
