I own an E30 M3 but don't claim to be an expert.  However, since
the fule injectors are controlled electronically, I would suspect
aproblem with the fule injection system if fuel is in the fuel rail. 

If the engine doesn't "pop"
you may want to throw some gas in a cylinder or two, turn it over and see if
it pops.  Then you KNOW you you have a fuel problem.  

I assume you are using the fule injection brain from the "donor" M3 when
I make these suggestions..
