E28 dome light problem (and tires)

  The interior light on my 87 535is is not working properly.
  If the interior light switch is in the center position, the
  lights will stay on all the time unless the ignition switch
  is turned on.
  
  My understanding is that when the door is opened, the interior
  lights should come on, when the door is closed the lights should
  remain on until the timer turns them off or the ignition switch
  is turned on.
  
  Do I have a bad timer module?  The Bentley says that the timer
  module is in the drivers footwell.  I see 3 module/relay looking
  things under there.  One is the interior light relay (does this
  have the timer also?) and the other 2 have the same part # so I
  assumed neither one is the timer.  There is an empty slot there
  so maybe the timer was pulled???  I dunno...it was working, then
  it quit, then it was working again for a few months, now its not.
