Atual Hajela wrote about steering problems with his '88 735i. Based on my
experiences with my own:
1) Temporary loss of power steering when going through pools of water is
due to the power steering belt getting wet and slipping, I believe.
I understand there is a shield that is supposed to guard against this
but it does not always work. Also, if the belt is at all loose it
exacerbates the tendency to slip when wet. I have had the same experience
and it is annoying.
2)The vibration through the steering wheel at 40-50mph sounds like a wheel
balance problem.
