E28 query for friend

A friend of mine, not on the net, asks:

"Does anyone know what the 6mm bolt with a plastic seal pressed into it,  
is about an inch long and is located in the front of an E28's steering box
does?"

I think he wants to know what the bolt does, not just whether anyone knows
what it does. :)
