A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I had a 1980 Audi
4000 (which also had the K-Jetronic) with very similar behavior.
After much messing with the fuel and intake systems, it turned out
that the distributor was broken, causing timing to go haywire. I
ended up replacing the whole distributor (big $), but all the
symptoms went away, and performance and mileage improved noticeably.
