For all those awaiting the results, it's finally in and running.
I replaced the chip on Sunday afternoon. This is what I found so far:
(remember that I am also using a K&N filter)
- - - Car feels much better in mid range (>2500) no more waiting till 3500 for
things to start kicking in.
- - - Car feels a little bit rougher. (just a tad)
- - - Idle seems to have dropped by ~100, but stable (no AC)
- - - Noticible improvement in acceleration (see #1)
- - - Jumps faster after 5000rpm to 6500. Even though chip raises limit to
6900 I don't want to really try it.
- - - Idle fluctuates a little with the AC on. I tested this morning. But never
drops to make the car shake. (visual estimation between 700-900)
- - - No more flat spots. It seems that there was one ~5000 and another ~6000.
- - - No gas mileage data yet.
- - - Would I recommend it? I am not sure. Total cost was $275 (including
computer swap). Depends how much your money means to you and what
type of driving do you do most. If your original chip was socketed,
you would pay a little less.
- - - Would I return it and try to get my money back? NO.
Optional Reading:
- - - Would I still trade with a 325 , YES. (given choice and money).
- - - Would I still trade with an M3 , YES YES YES. ( same ).
Hope the above helps.

Subject: 535i fuel injector problem
The symptoms described in this thread on drivability are very similar to
problems I had with my 535i at around 140,000 miles. Turns out it was a bad
fuel
pressure regulator, diagnosed when an observant mechanic noticed that the dial
on his fuel pressure gauge separated from the body and became a high speed
projectile after he attached it to my fuel line. A new regulator solved the
problem.

I noticed a recent list subscriber lamenting the fact that the chip in his '85
535i was soldered in. Any reputable electronics repair shop should be able to
cleanly remove the chip and replace it with a socket (about $2.00).

Insurance settlements:
Having recently gone throught this process, I thought that I'd drop my
2 bits into the discussion. In late July, my wife and I were struck
from behind while stopped in traffic in our 1970 Porsche 914. The
Ford Explorer was doing about 25mph at the time of impact. Car:
totalled. Humans: stiff & sore, but nothing broken :)
The insurance company offered me about $2K for the car. I felt this
was too low considering the care and upgrades that I had done to the
car so I presented my argument to the adjustor. The argument was
basically I had not just done minimal maintenance that was needed to
keep a 914 on the road, but had actually improved the value of the
vehicle by the upgrades performed. Also, I checked what the range of
asking prices for that year and model, then offered to settle with
them for $4200 plus the car as salvage. They accepted the
renegotiated settlement price. In the course of this affair, I had
consulted a lawyer regarding personal injury claims. When I mentioned
how readily they settled on the property damage claim (914), he
thought that it was the most prudent thing for the insurance company
to do. He mentioned that it was becoming more commonplace for
insurance companies not to fight the property damage claims as the ill
will and extended court battles that can ensue will quickly outstrip
the additional $2000. So, my advice is to ask for a settlement that
you feel reflects the fair market value of your car, and not to accept
the first offer they make. Use the Roundel ads for support of your
car's value.
Pertronix:
I'd suggest trying the tactic of giving them your Bosch distributor
number. They didn't have a listed application for our 1600ti, but the
Pertronix p/n 1847 fit with a little filing on the base plate. I got
that number by supplying the 1600ti Bosch distributor p/n to them.
Good luck!
