325is service indicator lights

I recently had an Inspection II service done on my 1989 325is, during which
the service indicator was reset. Now a week later the oil service light and
the yellow and red service lights came on. I took it back to the dealer and
they were unable to reset the lights. At this point they informed me it was
a bad board and it would cost $242 to replace it (labor included in this
price). The cost of the board from the dealer is approx. $148.

How can I be sure this is the problem? Can I get a board cheaper? and
finally, How hard is it to replace this board? (I am good with electronics
and basic car maint.)

Thanks for any help.
