I just ran into the same problem with my '93 325iS.  Apparently the SI is 
designed for only one oil change between a Major/Minor Service.

This is confirmed by looking at the blocks for the dealer service stamps
in the service manual which alternate between Oil Service and Minor/Major 
Service, and by the resident BMW electronics wizard Jim Conforti.

It looks like the newer SI was not designed for people that want to do more 
service than necessary.
