My friend's 1999 328 does the same thing.  The dealership is always able 
to "lube it away".  When I had my Volvo S70 failure ot keep the 
"steering stops" lubricated would cause a horible groaning sound to be 
emitted from the front of the car like the whole front suspension was 
about to give way.  Certain cars need a little help lubrication wise. 
My 22 Year old Mercedes has yet to make any kind of funky sounds out of 
the suspension (knock on wood).
