Been there done that, Pete.  Bavarian Autosport stocks the mesh grill; I 
think it's about $60.  It's fairly easy to replace the slats with the mesh.  
Remove the bumper cover and carefully back off the spring washers that hold the 
grill in place.  The mesh fits right in and fastens with the same spring washers.
