E30 M20 water pump

Ram
Carefully using a mechanic's stethoscope, you can "home-in" on the
origin of the sound. If it is the water pump, have it changed
immediately.
If the bearings totally fail it can also damage your radiator.
Sudden coolant loss will damage the motor.
A tow home is much more than the cost of the pump.
Unless you can document that the timing belt has been changed
within the two years or 25k miles, have it changed along with the
pump.
The pump housing is the "bump-stop" for the timing belt tensioner,
and the belt has to be moved out of the way in order to replace the
pump.
It's silly to not also replace the $25 belt (and tensioner) while
you've already done 90% of the labor.
