For proper torquing technique.. you should loosen somewhat so that you
can be moving while bringing things up to the torque point. You get
friction with stationary parts under pressure which normally results in
higher torque to get it started. So with the extra friction to finally
get it moving, you end up with an inaccurate amount of torque.
The reason to remove completly is so you can clean and apply fresh oil,
and have the contact friction be lowered even more.. as well as make
all the bolts equal in the amount of torque applied.
I remember Fred giving a little tip on the coolant problem. His hint
was to loosen the radiatior cap a bit, while squeezing the top hose to
generate a little pressure/displace a bit of water, then tighten the
cap, and finaly let go of the hose.. If done right, this creates
negative pressure in the cooling system (by the hose expanding back
again) and thereby, you don't have any coolant leaking out when you
loosen up your head nuts.
