RE: [alfa] Massachusetts insurance -- not Alfa-specific

MA is one of the worst states to have to insure anything in ...

Is Hagerty saying that the car must have 'antique' plates, or just be 25
years old or older?

I know the 25 year of age applies in MA for specialty insurance policies.

Most of these companies, Hagerty, Grundy, Leland, etc that write policies
for special interest vehicles have varying limits on use. These usually
include such things as you must have at least one other 'normal' car with
regular insurance, the car in question must be garaged at all times, and you
are not supposed to drive the car to work. Some also have mileage
limitations, however some of the companies (can't remember which ones), will
allow additional mileage if for example you were to drive your car cross
country to attend a national meet.

That's the limit of knowledge on the topic ...

Subject: [alfa] Massachusetts insurance -- not Alfa-specific

I just got a notice from Hagerty informing me that
they can (now?) only offer collector-car insurance to
Massachusetts residents for cars that have antique car
registrations. To get such a registration in Mass.,
you have to say you're only going to use your car for
parades, car club events, etc. That is, you are not
supposed to drive your car just for fun, but only for
state-defined forms of fun.

My first reaction is to wonder why Massachusetts
should care, so long as Hagerty is willing to write
the insurance. The coverage is the same, and I don't
think my driving my cars for fun is likely to lead
Hagerty into bankruptcy.

My second reaction is to wonder if other Massachusetts
residents have solutions to this problem. Are other
collector-car companies taking the same action?
Should we start a lobbying campaign? Are the rules in
other states similar?

Mark
