RE: RE: [alfa] Car Fax Reports

My understanding is that carfax relies data that is either reported to them,
or available to them from the state motor vehicle department.

Repairs, and (minor) collision damage won't show up. If a car is totaled,
gets a salvage title, and is then repaired this should show up. Mileage
information comes from state inspection info and/or data available when a
title is applied for when a car changes hands.

Like most other things, this is just another tool that can be used to help
avoid certain potential problems. It is not a substitute for common sense,
and having a vehicle inspected by knowledgeable, objective third party.

Then again, I could be completely wrong about all this :-)

Subject: RE: RE: [alfa] Car Fax Reports

I bought a truck July 2002 based in part on the clean carfax. I've run 2
more reports since then and all of them have come back clean. Then just last
week my wife was checking on insurance and the insurance agent looked up the
VIN and found a wreck in 2001. I probably would NOT have bought the truck
had I known. I definitely would NOT have paid what I paid had I known.

In my opinion, CarFax is worthless. About the only thing it MIGHT show is
odometer roll backs.
