Kevin You are not surposed to replace timming covers from engine to engine
as they are cast with that series of block. I am sure people have done this
with success but the timing cover is specific to your block. Over the years
and the many 1000's of castings the casting dimentions change. If you need
to replace the cover get one as close to the year you have as you can. If
you can fix the problem reliably then fix it.
Note: its like when you line bore a block. The crank now sits a frag(tech
term) different to where it did, causing potential problems with the
position of the timing case. If I recall there is plenty of alloy at the
mounting point. Drill it out and use a larger bolt with a nice fitiing
shank.
