[alfa] Re: alfa 147 Crash Test Pic

I've seen that before--it only provides actual information for the 33 and 147, and it's disappointing that they didn't do better. The "marginal" rating for the Spider and the "Excellent" rating for the 164 have nothing to do with crash tests of traffic accidents, they're just classifications of the vehicle based on its weight--pure, unadulterated American bullshit, in my opinion. If all the cars on the road were identical except for weight, and all traffic accidents involved vehicles hitting vehicles, lighter cars would be at a distinct disadvantage. However, reality doesn't work that way, and it wouldn't take much in the way of engineering for Alfa to build a tiny Spider that could be much safer than 2-ton American sedans of the era, some of which almost feel like they are dangerous by design.

I found the relevant thread on gtv6.org (I wonder what else I'm missing out on by refusing to read web forums), here's the URL: http://www.gtv6.org/discus/messages/206/3426.html?1042279378. I'm amazed that that guy walked away from a 50mph side impact in an Alfetta. Based on all the data that I've (casually) analyzed, high-speed side impacts with objects like trees and poles are almost universally fatal without head-cushion side airbags.

Joe,

Here is the link I found. It's been mentioned on the
digest before but I never really looked hard at it.

http://www.crashtest.com/alfa_romeo/

Pictures draw my attention a little more.
You can find the story about this fella's brother's
gtv-6 experience on gtv6.org. He's the guy that slid
into a pole or tree doing about 40. I think it was 50
m.p.h.

Do a search on the alfa forum there with the words
"crash test" or "crash"
