That's the trick of it, for those Brits: the cars are not really
irreplaceable. Thanks to an extensive network of cottage industries
devoted to the care and rebuilding of vintage automobiles, some of the
rarest vehicles can be thrashed and trashed this Saturday, and be back
as good as new in a week or two. When Willie Green momentarily forgot
that the Alfetta GP car he was driving was central-throttle, and sent it
into the Armco at full chat in a vintage race a few years back, the
owner merely said, "Oh, darn!" and had the car rebuilt and ready for the
next event. Have you ever looked through an English enthusiast magazine
and wondered how those guys can subject, say, Brescia Bugattis to the
rigors of Trials competitions (that's kinda like the Rubicon Trail,
except it's done with cars instead of Jeeps)? Hundreds of small shops
standing by to take any shattered bits and from them resurrect your old
car, back as good as new, that's how.

I'm frankly envious -
