Re: [alfa] Collector Car Insurance

Hi Jay:

You didn't mention what model Alfa you were planning to insure with a "Collector" company, but be forewarned, it will make a big difference. Several of the companies won't consider a car newer than 25 years old. I've got a '74 Spider that was insured by Hagerty Classic for a few years. When I bought an '87 Spider in November 2002, they told me to take a hike, with both cars. Hagerty also mentioned that my listed daily driver, a '94 Volvo 850 Turbo with less than 100,000 miles wasn't acceptable, as it was too old and unreliable (what?). Bear in mind that the Volvo wasn't insured with Hagerty, but they felt that if the Volvo was rendered undriveable, I'd be tempted to drive one of the Alfa's when I'm not supposed to. Didn't seem to matter that I also had 2 other "daily" drivers at the house, and I can't guess why they singled out the Volvo. Most companies will also want your car to be in a garage, and never driven to work.

So, I shopped around, and American Collectors had the coverages, restrictions, and rates that seemed to suit my needs the best. I've got the '74 covered for $9,500 and the '87 covered for $7,000, both with no deductibles, and a 2,500 mile annual limit on each. They realized that basically a Spider is a Spider, and since one of them was old enough, they agreed to cover both. I can't say if they would have taken just the '87. My premium is ~$160/year, but I'm sure that varies state-by-state, and maybe even within a state.

My best advice would be to shop around. I think AlfaBill has got his fleet of 164's insured with State Farm, which isn't a "collector" company, but he's mentioned great rates. Also, I've never made any claims, with Hagerty or American, so I can't speak about those issues.
