I was under the impression that water flows into the door and out the drain
holes (in theory of course). Modern cars have a better seal between the
window glass and the panel however the good old cars intended to allow water
into the door. I would remove the trim and plastic (replacing the plastic if
need with any substitute to ensure a good seal so that water does not rot
the trim. Clean out the bottom of the door, rust proof it and drill a few
hole along the length of the door. Don't be shy on drilling a sizable hole
so the water can flow. There are also drain holes in most of the lower
bodywork i.e. sills rear quarter. Lever them open gently with a large
flatblade screw driver
