The criteria I would use is: If there is no play when centered, the box
is OK.
Even if there is some play off center, you will never be aware of it.
When the
steering wheel is turned, the restoring force generated by the caster
angle will
take up all the play. Then as the wheel returns to center the play will
disappear. Only when you park the car with the steering off-center will
you
be aware of the looseness in the steering wheel. But then only the
aesthetics
will matter. Be sure to have the alignment checked for proper caster
angle.
