[alfa] 105 steering box

I'm painting my engine compartment and have it stripped of everything including
the ZF steering box. Playing with it out of the car raises a question or two.

How do I tell if it's worn out? I tried adjusting the screw as per the
instructions in the Alfa Bible (tighten until v. slight binding is felt at the
center position, then tighten the locknut). When I do this it feels ok in the
center, slightly better than pre-adjustment - but there is a lot of play at
extreme lock (hard to tell how extreme with the box out of the car...). Braden
sort of suggests that zero-play is only attainable at the center, but is that
true? Looking at the mechanism with the lid off the box I can see why there
would be some play at extreme lock (the angle that the gears engage at is only
optimal at the center point) but how bad should it be? What are the criteria
for needing to rebuild a sterering box?

Thanks
