I did my struts a few months ago. Take a small chunk of hose an inch or two long, with an ID somewhere around 3/4", and slice it down one side.

Now you can slip the hose over the strut and grip it with a pair of channel locks or similar pliers without fear of damage. A piece of leather might work too.
