Are there any cures for a leaking rack besides pulling it? Is draining
and
disconnecting the PS pump belt and option? How involved is replacing the
rack? Do I have to pull the engine to replace, any special tools, is this
best left to an expert, etc.

I'm way behind reading digests, so this may have been covered already yet,
but I have had success with the PS/auto trans fluids that contain some
additive to stop leaks (presumably by swelling the seals).

I had a leak from the ps rack on a Fiat Croma (different to the Milano, but
presumably similar to 164 one) I was skeptical, but thought it was worth a
try given the $ and hassles involved otherwise. Took about a month and a few
fillups to work, but then was fine for a year or two until I sold the car.

Worth a go, depending on how long you want to keep the car.
