Are there any cures for a leaking rack besides pulling it? Is draining
and
disconnecting the PS pump belt and option? How involved is replacing the
rack? Do I have to pull the engine to replace, any special tools, is this
best left to an expert, etc.

TIA,
Graham

Graham (this is going to sound like a conversation with a drunk), you can
replace the rack with the engine in the car as long as you have a high
threshold for pain. I assume you do as you already own a Milano! It is
rather involved: drain coolant and remove cooling hoses, drain hydraulic
fluid, separate exhaust down-pipes from manifolds, remove washer bottle,
airflow meter and box, front motor-mount-to-chassis screws, jack the
motor at the front of the sump up as high as it will go. Then you can
work on the column-to-rack coupling (more pain), then tie rod ends
(easy), banjo couplings and finally the easy part, the rack itself. It
helps to have plenty of cold beer and a tolerant significant other.

Regarding comparing ABS parts at the GM counter, GM is using sealed,
opaque plastic packaging for many of their parts. According to the
counter guys at Plaza Cadillac (MB, Audi, Porsche, etc.) the packages
cannot be opened for inspection except by the purchaser and then if they
are opened, they cannot be accepted for return. They don't make it easy.
