[alfa] Transmission question

I'm having problems with my tranny.  Remarkably it is associated with
reverse rather than 2nd gear. :)  I've changed the transmission mounts
and it still pops out of reverse when torque is applied.   Specifically
my question is: Is there are way to get in and fix the problem without
having to completely drop the tranny out.  My mechanic said that he had
read some years ago about a method to get into the transmission without 
completely removing it and has set me to the task of finding out if
