Exploding fans are generally caused by sagging motor mounts.  I had one 
let loose too (holing my radiator, and denting the hood) and I initially 
suspected an old fan.   But after hearing many similar tales of woe, I 
learned that when the mounts get soft it lets the engine move enough to 
cause the fan blade to hit the cross memember... *blam*

I had my radiator repaired, and it worked fine.
