You're probably right. They are more than likely bronze. Bronze is used
for automotive bushings, so I suspect that synchros are bronze as well.
Makes much more sense.

I think bronze might have been used in preference to brass as it is
less brittle and also microporous so holds lubricant well without
interfering with the grip required for the synchro to work. Bronze is
tougher than brass. Granted they looked nice and shiny like brass, but
I bet they were bronze.
Anyhoo, the synchros in my SAAB tranny were quite large in diameter
and appeared plenty robust for absorbing the friction loads
adequately, they seemed larger in diameter than the gears they
selected.
