[alfa] Re: gear lightening / 2nd synchro

Sorry guys,

I've had my 2.0L Spider for 24 years now and am on my second
transmission. After 5 years heavy driving on the German autobahns
at 100-110 mph for hours at a time and sporty driving through
the hills and dales of Europe, I developed a "second gear synchro
problem", ie, it ground when putting into second gear if I didn't
double clutch going down. I always changed the gear oil every
15,000 miles as recommended and sometimes more often. At about
90,000 miles I over-reved the engine (over 7,000 rpm) when my
accelerator pedal got caught under the floor mat twice in a row
getting onto an on ramp and then getting into traffic and I sheared
the six bolts holding the flywheel onto the crankshaft. The car sat
for a few years, (due to lack of funds) and when I got around to getting
the problems fixd including the gear box, I thought that I only needed
to get second gear synchro replaced; the the mechanic told me that
the whole box needed to be rebuilt or replaced as it was totally kaput.
The mechanic installed a good used gearbox that he got and it's been good
for
about 5 years now, although we found out that the front bearing needs
replacement when I had the engine pulled for my recent re-build.
So to put it simply while I am glad that some of you guys have not
had any problems with second gear synchro, nevertheless, some of us
have had to deal with that gremlin.

Hi Peter, and group:

I think I've said this before, but I'll say it again. I've been driving
105/115 Alfa's since the late 70's, and before I began reading this Digest
I never knew there was a second-gear synchro problem. I've also never had
to perform any kind of gearbox repair, nor I ever been aware that any
gearbox repairs were done to any Alfa I've ever owned. When I've driven
lesser cars, like the several BMW's I've bought new (325e, 535i, M5, M3),
I've always wished they had a gearbox as pleasant to use as the one in the
Alfa that I happened to own at the time. What's next? Are some of you
guys going to start complaining about Spica injection?
