BS Engineering major in machine design, PE. This is enough of a no-brainer
that no FEA is needed to prove the point.

Take a peek at PLENTY of larger gears (usually cast) with narrowed centers
and even spoked centers to get the idea.

Also, is rather elementary to show that the 'disc' portion of a gear is
plenty strong with simple calcs. FEA would be so much overkill that it's a
joke.
