Since Richard lives in Florida and possibly never needs the heater, even in winter, it flashed through my mind that a quick and dirty solution to a stepper problem, if indeed he has one, would be to shunt the engine coolant around the heater core. This fix is sometimes used by folks having a leaking heating core. I don't know if the engine in the 164 depends on the heater core to disperse some of its heat, though.
