Might depend on where Jonathan is driving his car.  At least in
Massachusetts, this is one of the items that gets checked when I go in
for an annual inspection, either in the GTV or the 164.  I've been
nabbed for them not working before (though the inspector let me fix them
on the spot and get my sticker, which did not of course require R&R of
the transmission).
