If "something has sheared in the driveline" or "the crank has broken, or
something has sheared at the flywheel," then it is unlikely that he could
have backed it up with the starter motor. In fact, if the crank broke, it is
unlikely that the motor can turn over.

Your feeling about "jumped timing" sounds more plausible. Though, with the
info given it is impossible to know. It could be out of gas (he said
smiling).
