Was Cafe Racers

Hi All the Digestibles,

The subject of Cafe Racers was only one peculiar item to occur in the 1960's in England.

Not many people know this, but Cooper Cars often used to test their F1 and F2 cars on the
Guildford bypass at night, with the tacit approval of the local police. They would set up
road blocks on the stretch of road to prevent other motorists from using this section of
road whilst John Cooper and his Grand Prix drivers tested cars due to go to the next Grand
Prix.

It was on this same stretch of road that John Cooper almost lost his life whilst testing
the special twin engined Mini. At high speed a tie rod on the rear engine subframe broke
and the car catapulted off the road into a field. This occurred late one night and caused
a lot of red faces amongst the local police involved in their little game.
