Mimicking Jeff, although different circumstances, I, too would also like
to know how the guys racing Alfa's accomplish a ring break in.  You
can't drive it on the street, or at least not for the required amount of
miles and you obviously can't follow the prescribed "break in" rules on
the track or you'd get run over by the pace car.  BTW, I've follow the
Hastings method and solved the cam  break in by driving off slowly right
from the start doing a lot of short shifting.  Once the oil temp is up
(approx. 15 min) the cams are broken in and then I proceed to that long
uphill run to torture the rings.

So, how does one break in new cams without idling the engine
excessivlely so that the rings/sleeves don't get glazed and the rings
seat properly?

Experience proves that idling a fresh engine is not a good thing, or is
the 'fast idle' considered ok?

Generally, most ring manufacturers don't recommend idling the engine.
