Yep, BTDT. Hold the female (front?) vertically in a vice and drop the male
(rear?) down into it. While it's going in, keep the bushing vertical and
square by aligning it with a screwdriver. It might take a few goes to get it
right, but when it sits down properly, it's a very positive fit.

If you attempt to tighten up the couplings with the bushing not properly
engaged, you will push the bushing off the back of the ball. No big deal -
you just need to lever it back into place with a big screwdriver or two.
