Drive shaft U joint (73 Spider)

I took the drive shaft from my 73 Spider into a local auto machine shop to
have the "U" joints replaced. The new "U" joints, from Centerline, came with
small springs in the box. The guy at the shop (not an Alfa shop!) said he had
not seen "U" joints with little springs before and said they were not needed.
I asked him to wait until I checked things. I recall seeing a diagram at some
point that showed the springs inside under the bearing caps. Does anyone have
information if the springs are needed and how they are installed (four springs
per joint or two)?
