It's common for exhaust manifold nuts to come loose on new gaskets (like your 22k mile car).  It's always at the rear cylinders (3 and 4).  It will make a ticking noise that sounds very much like a  loose valve.  It is usually louder when the engine is cold.
So: check your nuts!
