Re Laminated Screens

Mike Smith says "I'm not critical of laminated windshields. My point was
they are not
mandatory in Europe and tempered windshields are the norm there I believe."

As far as I know just about all windscreens in Europe are laminated, and have
been so for twenty years or thereabouts. The change really came in when crash
testing started to get serious as the laminated screens added so much to the
rigidity of the monocoque/ unitary construction. Also, when the wearing of
seat belts became compulsory it took away the 'raison 'd'etre' of toughened
screens..being safer to travel through with your visage !!! We had an odd
toughened screen called a Zebrazone as it looked like one of our UK Zebra
crossings. I saw one in an old van the other day and thought "I haven't seen
one of those for ages"

I had a shock tonight. I drove home past a friends house. He is a magpie for
cars, but goes for Jaguars, old Rovers, Landrovers i.e. almost exclusively old
British stuff. He even has a Trojan bubble car! Parked in his drive todays was
an Alfa Romeo 116 Guilietta....in very good condition. I am wondering if he
has had an Ebay ' weak moment ' as its entirely out of character. A mystery
till i speak with him!
