Flywheel for 2.0 Liter Spider
Upon reassembling my 1979 2.0 Liter Spider engine, my mechanic
noted that the flywheel's center hole was not properly centered on
the crankshaft and was wobbling. Upon inspection it was noted that
the hole had been enlarged slightly. This happened about ten years
ago when I over=reved my engine due to the gas pedal getting stuck
under the floor mat and it went over 7000 RPM and sheered the six
bolts that hold the flywheel onto the crankshaft. Apparently when
this happened the crankshaft enlarged the hole in the flywheel and
mangled it up a bit. When the car was repaired about six years after
the incident, I didn't have the money to play with it at the time, it
was repaired by a European car repair shop that worked on various cars.
The flywheel was replaced and did not seem to cause a problem. The shop
where my car is being worked on is an Alfa Romeo dealer and the mechanic
feels that the flywheel needs to be replaced. Unfortunately we have not
been able to find a flywheel yet in Italy either through Alfa or AFRA or
any local junk yard that I have been able to contact.
Does anyone know how close the tolerances need to be on the flywheel hole
that goes over the crankshaft? Upon thinking on this it seems to me that
the six bolts center the flywheel and the wobbling of the flywheel on the
crankshaft before the bolts are tightened up is not critical. Is it?
If I do need a new flywheel, what are the sources for a lightened flywheel
for street use. I don't want a racing flywheel that is about half the
weight? I called AR Ricambi for a used flywheel, but they didn't have one
I didn't ask about their racing flywheel. Paul Spruell also has a racing
flywheel that is 7.2 pounds vs. a stock 21.5 pound. I plan on calling him
today for a recommendation. I remember reading about other sources, but
did not at the time save them, if anyone has any other sources for lightened
or used flywheels I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.
