Subject: spider/gtv transmission mount
All
The time has come to change the tranny mount on the 74 spider. I've done
this before, and it is no big deal - BUT - the mount seems very
flimsy. Has anyone tried to modify the mount by filling the voids
(partially or completely) with something like RTV? Or possibly inserting
some kind of polyurethane bushing in there in place of the standard mount?
Also, this mount is not symmetrical. The void/gap in rubber is larger on
one side versus the other. Any comments?
I know of at least two brand new ones here in SW Portland that have had fuel
line and RTV stuffed into the voids before they are even in the car. Used on
a failing mount, the stuffing may extend service some, but the factory
designed some give in there for a reason. There's going to be stress; where
would you rather it be absorbed?
The owners who've stuffed the new mounts here are both enthusiastic track day
drivers and have resigned themselves to more mechanical stress---maybe not
much more---in return for the potential of higher maintenance. YMWV.
