You could just use a hose to test it out. If the theory is correct, you'll
see the leak.

In a more general sense, that guess may still be perfectly valid. If
it's the leaves and crap that get forced into the heating ducts,
they'll clog the AC evaporator enclosure's drains and the
condensation from the evaporator will end up on the floor in the
event that you use the AC, which you probably would in the Gobi
desert.
