Wires (gonna tryta stop, honest!)
Re wire wheels Michael Smith writes "and let the controversy continue" to
which I must ask "What controversy?" Wire wheels have certain conceptual
advantages, certain application flexibility for individual cases, and certain
aesthetic advantages for many people, but it has been decades since anyone has
used them on a no-compromise "prototype" competition car or on a
cost-no-object road supercar, let alone on supercritical applications like
hardest-case aircraft landing-gear. Lunar Rover, perhaps; Space Shuttle, not
bloody likely. Anachronism? Well, like most brilliant and admirable day-old
technology, at least receding into archaism, like clockwork escapements,
vacuum tube electronics, pianos, printing presses (and the list goes on, yours
probably will differ). Classicism is part of what it is about, and the
counterpoint between classicism and change, which may or may not be progress.
I wouldn't chose to live without both.
