stuck on upholstery!

I could use some advice from someone with experience in re-skinning Spider
seats.

I've got a ' 74 Spider and while dressing up the interior this past week
(new stereo/speakers/amp/door panels/console sides, etc.) I decided to have
a go at re-skinning the seats with some new vinyl skins that I've had on
the shelf for some time.
I began on the passenger side seat back and it didn't take too long for me
to bump into a couple of obstacles.
The first is that I can't see how the seat-to-seat-back hinges come off of
the side of the seats in order to pull the old upholstery off and get the
new on at that point. I certainly don't want to do any damage so some
feedback of experience or advice would be appreciated.
The second obstacle I ran into is as much mental as physical. As the seat
bottom vinyl came up and over the front edge and lifted off the seating
area, it appeared that there were a multitude of fine threads pulling out
from the detented inner edge of the foam seat bolster where it meats the
flat foam of the seating surface. I can't see that there is any evidence
(apart from the threads) that the seat could ever have been sewn through
the foam at this point, but the presence of the threads has me in a state
of consternation. Can anyone shed light on what I've witnessed?
I'm not beyond hauling the seats to an upholstery shop to get the job done
if necessary, but the weather's beautiful and I'm anxious to get on the
road again and I'm in a working/learning mentality at the moment that I
don't want to have fade away (plus I need to get my insurance apprasial
done again right away and pride tells me that the appraiser really ought to
see seats in the car when he looks at it).
