If you did not clear the carbon before running the compression test on your engine you may have gotten innaccurate readings.  It's a common mistake to omit this step, I've seen many engines mis-diagnosed as a result.  
 
Also, Spica engined cars will show sooty plugs even when the mixture is correct unless you do a proper high speed cut before checking them.
