Re: Need help re-setting Alfa Spider speedometer "zero"

Hi Scott:

I think your problem is one of jarred memory, rather than a jarred speedo or sender. Your speedo needle never points to zero, even with the car locked in the garage. My '87 Spider was originally sold in Toronto, so it reads in km/h, but the needle rests at ~22 km/h (~14 mph). In similar fashion, the tach needle rests at 500 rpm. The speedo and tach in my '74 have similar resting readings, too, but in those gauges a pin on the gauge face is visible.

Too bad you've got to sell the Spider, but if you want to tell the new owner anything about the speedo, tell him/her to feel lucky that it works at all. Don't forget to apologize to your mechanic.

I had the clutch Master Cylinder replaced by a mechanic. He must have
whacked the speedometer sender unit located adjacent, since immediately
afterword the speedometer at rest reads 15 mph. The speedometer and
odometer work just fine except for speeds less than 15 mph (then it reads
15mph). I also tried to disconnect the speedometer electrical connector,
but that did not reset anything. International Auto told me that replacing
the speedometer sender unit will probably NOT fix the problem but that there
likely is some way to adjust the "zero". Any ideas? I just listed the car
for sale on ebay - ending Tuesday 5/20/03, so if anyone has some suggestions
I want to let the new buyer know what to expect. Thanks.
