John, as Alfas are metric I'd say the sender/adapter is the wrong thread.
Get the correct item, or at least an adapter with the correct thread and it
should work fine.
If the thread is actually damaged and you need to pull the manifold for
access, you could always tap it out to the next oversize, but I'd helicoil
it back to original specs myself.
A brass adapter with a taper thread might work for a time until you get
around to fixing it properly ( Oooh a shiver ! I think I just felt Fred's
scowl bearing down upon me for that last suggestion :-)
