Report from Buenos Aires

Stepping off the plane at Ezeiza Airport I quickly saw three Alfa Romeos: a
145, 164, and a 156. Although Alfas are sold new here, I have seen only a
handful around town since then. The ubiquitous cars around here are Fiats
(made in Brazil) and -- I realize this is a touchy issue stateside these days
-- the French-made Peugeot and Renaults. The 405/406s are particularly nice
looking, even if they were manufactured by communist-led auto unions in Paris
and Lyon, you know, the ones who said "non" to the war in Iraq.

Japanese imports are rare, as are BMWs and Audis. Notwithstanding your
political viewpoint, the economy in Argentina has been in free fall for
several years, due to (pick one) socialist or neo-liberal mismanagement, that
has left the average PorteC1o with little extra cash for that new 147.

The driving in Buenos Aires is scary, but nothing like Mexico City. All and
all, a beautiful city -- a little bit of the Old World in the New.
