I have the head off my '77 2L spider to change the gasket. I see references (as above) to "surgically clean". I'm looking for some definition on this. I have used permatex gasket remover and have been going over the head and block with ultra fine steel wool. There are still some marks from the previous head gasket. There's nothing that I can feel with my fingers, or get off with the steel wool, but it certainly doesn't look like it was just resurfaced. Is that a problem? Should I keep going with the steel wool?

As a follow up - I have noticed there is sludge around the outside of the piston liners. Some of it is like small gravel. This is proving difficult to get out Any suggestions? Will it do any harm there?
